ISL, developer of the Infigo web-to-print software, has launched an entry-level variable data printing (VDP) tool to give printers a low-cost alternative to existing packages.
Infigo VDP, which is currently undergoing beta testing, gives printers all the components needed to quickly create document templates for new clients.
It uses a menu-driven system to set up a template and allows dynamic control of a document, including the formatting of images, text and colours, and the incorporation of a wide range of variable data fields.
The software will initially be available in desktop version only, although ISL managing director Douglas Gibson said that, over time, the intention was to move to a Software as a Service (SaaS) model.
Gibson said: "A lot of printers will occasionally get asked to do low-run personalised mailshots, but unless you're printing DM everyday then the cost of a professional tool like this has been prohibitive until now.
"What Infigo VDP does is provide printers with a tool that is simple to use, but still gives them the power to do everything they need to to create their own templates, without needing a graphic designer or a web programmer to use the system."
Infigo VDP, which will cost from around £1,200, uses the same Adobe Acrobat plug-in that is used to design and configure PDF documents in ISL's Infigo web-to-print software.
Standard features include a text conversion tool; JavaScript editing tool; automated copy fitting; support for Pantone, CMYK and RGB; and a Text on Curve tool that allows users to fit text to different shapes, such as a cup or plate.
It will also feature a number of optional modules, including barcoding, Photoshop support, and for image personalisation in the Direct Smile vein.
The software was developed in partnership with Adobe Solutions Network member Mapsoft Computer Services, which has worked with ISL and sister company Bytes Document Solutions on the Infigo product range for several years.
