ShareQuad/Graphics officials announced Tuesday that 80 percent of the employees at the Mt. Morris printing plant will lose their jobs over the next few months.
Clair Ho, director of corporation communications for Quad/Graphics, said 400 of the Mt. Morris facility's 500 workers will get pink slips by April 1. The job cuts will begin in January.
"We're meeting with employees today to inform them that we need to reduce jobs there," Ho said. "It's difficult to communicate this kind of information to our employees."
A loss of customers brought on the job reductions, which will also mean eliminating two departments — Bindery and Finishing & Offset Press.
"The reason is a loss of client work that was not renewed prior to Quad/Graphics acquisition of the facility," Ho said.
Quad/Graphics, Inc., acquired the Mt. Morris plant in January of 2010 when it purchased World Color Press, Inc., for $1.3 billion.
Ho declined to comment on what customers were lost, but sources have indicated that work done for Sears and Scholastic went to R.R. Donnelly, a printing competitor.
As of April 1, Ho said, only the Rotogravure Department will remain. The gravure presses and remaining 100 employees will print newspaper inserts, she said.
Ho said company officials will meet with the terminated employees to present job opportunities available at other Quad/Graphics facilities.
Quad/Graphics also announced Tuesday the closing of its printing plant in Fredericksburg, Va., by the end of January.
The facility employs 300 full-time and part-time workers.
Headquartered in Sussex, Wis., Quad/Graphics employs 30,000 workers, serving customers across the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Europe.
