Global Graphics to demonstrate JDF-enabled Harlequin®RIP at drupa 2004

　　Global Graphics, a subsidiary of Global Graphics SA (Euronext: GLOG) and developer of the Harlequin® RIP, will be co-exhibiting with the PrintCity strategic alliance at drupa 2004 (6th-19th May 2004) to demonstrate a JDF-enabled Harlequin RIP as part of a live and fully-integrated Job Definition Format workflow, in which multiple vendors will integrate their technologies to produce a variety of publishing, commercial and packaging jobs in a unique display.

　　The demonstration is part of Global Graphics' JDF development effort, the results of which will also be seen on several other exhibition stands at the show because Global Graphics is a major technology provider to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) supplying the printing and publishing industry. Around 20 Global Graphics OEMs are signed up for drupa so far.

　　The Harlequin RIP will be fully-compliant with the latest JDF specification v1.1a and capable of automatically controlling the rendering, screening, trapping, colour management, calibration and output of combined or separated files. Within the PrintCity integrated workflow demonstration specifically, the Harlequin RIP will be handling a remote proofing application where PDF files delivered by an Agfa workflow will be automatically processed and output at high speed and high quality to an inkjet proofing system.

　　Global Graphics' Harlequin RIP technology is recognised as the standard for high-performance RIP technology and is a key component of many industry leading proofing, imaging and direct-to-print workflows worldwide. The latest generation of the RIP - the Harlequin RIP Eclipse ReleaseT - features sophisticated colour control and trapping options, flexible dispersed and stochastic screening options, plus native PDF 1.4, compatibility.

　　The company is heavily committed to evolving standards that bring significant improvements in print and communication processes and that provide its OEMs with a higher degree of compatibility with other vendors. "This is why we are at the forefront of JDF development both as an industry-wide standard and specifically within our own RIP and PDF-based technologies", explains Martin Bailey, Senior Technical Consultant at Global Graphics and currently acting as Chief Executive of the CIP4 organisation.

　　Global Graphics is active within two of the principle forums working towards JDF interoperability: In addition to being a founding member of CIP4, the company is part of the PrintCity Networking Activity Group which focuses on the integration of the various components in the "Closed loop..open systems" production workflow philosophy of the alliance.

　　As part of its JDF development programme, Global Graphics will enable JDF-based production to be applied by all sizes of prepress and print companies with varying levels of job management and workflow automation.

　　"There is a mistaken belief that companies need to have a full-scale MIS system in place before they can start to take proper advantage of the efficiency and automation that JDF will bring," says Martin Bailey. "It's important to stress that the benefits of JDF-based production will be felt at all levels ranging from large, all-encompassing workflows down to quite simple implementations. For example just by integrating a JDF-capable imposition programme with a RIP that can automatically interpret the imposition instructions in the job ticket, users will gain improvements in production speed and accuracy from this one step alone."
